The beginners guide to a daily Ayurvedic routine (Dinacharya)

“Dinacharya” is an Ayurvedic concept which refers to a daily routine to help maintain balance, promoting health physically, mentally and spiritually.

To support you on starting your Ayurvedic journey, I’ve outlined 5 simple rituals which you can easily integrate into your day.

These practices are designed to help you align with your body’s natural rhythm, enhancing both digestive health and mental clarity.  The intention is not to approach this as a set of tasks to complete, but to slowly cultivate these practices as part of your everyday routine.

Ritual 1 – Tongue scraping and oil pulling

After waking and brushing your teeth, using a U-shaped metal tongue scraper—or a toothbrush if you’re new to the practice – gently remove the thin coating that forms on the tongue overnight. This Ayurvedic ritual supports the body’s natural detoxification process by clearing away toxins accumulated during sleep, while also helping to awaken and stimulate the digestive system for the day ahead.

Follow this with oil pulling: take about one tablespoon of organic coconut, sesame, or olive oil and swish it slowly around your mouth for 5–10 minutes. Be sure not to swallow the oil, as it draws out impurities. This practice helps reduce harmful bacteria, supporting oral health.

Ritual 2 – Self massage (Abhyanga)

Before showering, take a few minutes to gently apply and massage warm oil into your skin. This nourishing practice helps stimulate circulation, soothe the nervous system, and prepare both body and mind for the day ahead.

Ritual 3 – Eat your heaviest meal of the day between 10am and 2pm

Digestion is strongest between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM, when the body’s internal fire (agni) is at its peak. Consuming your main or heaviest meal during this window supports optimal digestion and nutrient absorption.

Ritual 4 – Start winding down by 8pm

Establishing a calming evening routine and beginning to wind down between 8 and 9:30pm aligns your body and mind with natural circadian rhythms.  This supports deeper sleep, balances the nervous system, improves digestion, and enhances overall physical and mental restoration.

Ritual 5 – Foot massage before bedtime

A foot massage stimulates vital energy points.  Incorporating a nighttime foot massage into your evening routine soothes the nervous system, promotes restful sleep, and supports overall balance.

By embracing these simple Ayurvedic rituals, you can gently tune into your body’s natural rhythms.  Remember, the key is consistency and mindfulness, not perfection.

Start small, listen to your body, and allow these practices to become a meaningful part of your daily routine.
